web links
There is a multitude of information available on the internet about the
area. Please find below some of those that are most helpful to our guests:
local information
Further information about Luing is available at www.isleofluing.co.uk.
There are also good web pages on Luing at Undiscovered
Scotland and Scottish
island Shopping. Information about the whole of the Slate Islands
group (includes Luing, Easdale and Seil) is available at at www.seil.oban.ws/islands.html.
boat trips
Of the many boat trips in the area, the two that we recommend are the
closest and (we think) the best!
Seafari operates
fast and furious boat trips from the village of Ellenabeich on Seil. They
combine excitement that will appeal to adults and older children, along
with a very informative talk on the wildlife and heritage in the area.
If you are interested in wildlife then we can highly recommend a trip
aboard "Porpoise III" based at Balvicar Harbour on Seil. Skippered
by an experienced marine biologist and underwater cameraman, the trips
combine comfort and excellent facilities with a very knowledgable crew
who will tell you about the animals and birds that you will see, as well
as historic tales of the islands. More information is available at www.sealife-adventures.com.
If you are interested in trips further afield, for example to see puffins
nesting on the Treshnish Isles, or to visit Staffa or Iona, then
please mention it when booking so that we can advise you on the
best times to do this. Further
information on wildlife trips in the area can be found at here.
attractions
There is an excellent museum of local history on the neighbouring island
of Easdale. This is run by the Slate Islands Heritage Trust, and they
have further information available on the web at www.slate.org.uk.
South of Luing lies Kilmartin Glen, an area of outstanding archaeological
importance. There are 350 ancient monuments within the area, and information
on them is available at Kilmartin
Museum along with hands on exhibits for children and an audio
visual display.
The Scottish Sea
Life Sanctuary north of Oban is also very popular with families.
It combines a seal hospital, seahorse breeding centre and the usual
exhibits you would expect from a sea life centre. There are talks
and feeding sessions running throughout the day, along with rockpool
handling sessions.
There is also online information about local
nature reserves and wildlife
watching tours and trips.
